
Emergency departments are crowded for a lot of reasons, but one small bottleneck happens before the physician even walks into the room.
We often start with a blank slate. The patient has a story, the clinician needs that story, and the waiting room is just sitting there as unused time. A new pediatric ED pilot study tested whether ChatGPT could collect a patient’s history in the waiting room and turn it into a usable HPI for clinicians.
The results were promising, but the bigger question is whether this can actually fit into ED workflows without creating more work for nurses, patients, or physicians…
