DMEPOS suppliers are healthcare’s last-mile middlemen. They sit between the clinician who orders a device, the manufacturer that makes it, the payer that decides whether to cover it, the hospital trying to discharge the patient, and the patient who needs it to work at home.
Their job is more complicated than selling equipment. They turn a prescription into a covered, delivered, taught, maintained, replenished, and billed home-care service.
Some parts of this business are ripe for automation or direct fulfillment. A box of catheter supplies does not need the same infrastructure as a home ventilator. But healthcare cannot eliminate the underlying role without handing it to manufacturers, payers, health systems, or patients.
